Misinformation and fake news about migration in Africa are pervasive and have a significant negative impacts on both migrants and host communities.
The false information perpetuates harmful stereotypes, fosters xenophobia and undermines social cohesion.
Despite the availability of factual data, myths and misconceptions continue to spread rapidly through social media, traditional media, and word-of-mouth, creating an urgent need for effective solutions to combat this issue.
Migrant Check Chatbot & Page is here to address this challenge by debunking misinformation around migration, educate the public and promote accurate narratives about migration.
This page works by providing timely information through debunking and countering ongoing misinformation around migration, and shall have such sections being updated regularly.
Migrant Narratives Africa has Partnered with Media Challenge Initiative and Debunk Media Initiative supported by the US Mission in Uganda, to develop this page and the Migrant Check Chatbot coming soon.
The goal is to foster a more informed and empathetic understanding of migration issues that supports the well-being and integration of migrants and enhances community harmony.
The harmony and peaceful living will help us avoid issues like Xenophobia as experienced in different African countries in the past, avoid war and basically co-exist as human beings.
Why is this important?
- Media Literacy- The general public will make informed decisions after having accurate, factual information concerning migration & migrants generally.
- The Migrant Community will have a fairer representation of facts.
- Policy makers will have what to base on to enhance better migration policies.
- Migration Development Partners will have what to base on to extend support on the migrant community.
